Lapchi Kang Trek to Find Inner Peace: A Transformative Trip

The Lapchi Kang Trek is a true hidden gem in the Himalayas and an unparalleled opportunity to experience one of Nepal’s most spiritual regions, rarely visited. Nestled in the quiet mountains, this off-the-radar route guides intrepid travelers through peaceful scenery and ancient holy places for a pilgrimage that is as much a journey of the body as it is a pilgrimage of the heart and happiness.

At the center of this trek is the Lapchi Monastery, a holy shrine where monks have meditated for centuries. Lapchi village is the site of the most famous monastery in all of Nepal. There is a calmness in this region overlaid with the moods of the pious monks that adds a layer of tranquility to the very font.

The Milarepa Cave, named after the famous Tibetan yogi and poet, Milarepa, who meditated in this cave over several years, is one of the highlights of the trek. The sacred cave is also a pilgrimage site for international Buddhists and spiritual seekers that comes here for reflection and meditation amidst the mesmerizing setting of the Himalayas. Visiting this cave is often described as a once-in-a-lifetime journey, allowing trekkers to connect with the deep spiritual energy that permeates the region.

The journey to Lapchi is a blend of breathtaking natural beauty and profound spiritual exploration. The trek winds through lush forests, past cascading waterfalls, and across high-altitude passes, each step bringing trekkers closer to the essence of the Himalayas. As you navigate this less-traveled path, you’ll encounter local villagers who live simple, traditional lives, deeply connected to their land and spiritual heritage.

The trek is not about destiny and destination, but it is about the journey and the change it brings. All the untouched trails, the epic mountains, and the spiritual sites give you a deep peace that never seems to leave, even long after the expedition. It’s an opportunity to shut the door on the craziness of life as usual, become one with the earth and discover a deeper well of contentment inside.

The Lapchi Kang Trek, in a nutshell, is not just an adventure for trekkers; it is pilgrimage of the soul and an opportunity to witness the spirituality and natural beauty intermingling on this mystical route. Be it adventure, a meditation, or something spiritual, this trek will be an experience of a lifetime with you forever.

Itinerary
Day 01: Drive from Kathmandu to Singate - Lamabagar:

We start our journey with a 10-hour drive from Kathmandu to Singate and then to Lamabagar. You can travel by public bus or hire a private jeep for an extra cost. Overnight stay will be in a basic lodge or a homestay.

Day 02: Trek from Lamabagar (Tsho Sham) to Lower Lumnang (2700m):

We take a local jeep through a 1300-meter-long unlit tunnel built by the Hydro Company. After that, we trek along a narrow, temporary path as the old trail was damaged during road construction. By next year, the path is expected to be wider. Today’s destination is Lower Lumnang, a winter settlement for the people of Lapchi.

Day 03: Trek from Lower Lumnang to Lapchi Monastery (3670m):

Following a stream under the shadow of Mount Gaurishankar (7134m), we trek to Lapchi Village. Here, you can visit the Lapchi Monastery and see around 14 houses. The local community mainly herds yaks.

Day 04: Hike to Milarepa Cave and Manjushree Lake:

We explore cultural and natural sites, with a chance to spot Himalayan Thar or Blue Sheep. The highest point of the day will be 4300m. The river at Lapchi Village splits into two—one from Lapchi Chuwa (now a Chinese military camp) and the other from Nyalam, a key supply route for yak caravans from Tibet. We can also hike up Lapchi Mountain with permission, visiting retreat houses and Gompas, including the sacred Dudul Pug, Choera Gompa, Rechen Gompa (with Milarepa’s footprints), and Zhe Pug, where a holy water spring flows.

Day 05: Extra Day in Lapchi:

This is a free day for those who wish to meditate or retreat, as this trek is primarily a Buddhist pilgrimage. If not, we can skip this day, making the trek one day shorter.

Day 06: Trek from Lapchi Village to Lumnang:

We bid farewell to the people of Lapchi Village and return to Lumnang. The trek offers another chance to enjoy the serene environment.

Day 07: Trek from Lumnang to Lamabagar:

On this final trekking day, we walk for 6 to 7 hours back to Lamabagar, enjoying the sounds of the river and the natural surroundings.

Day 08: Drive back to Kathmandu:

After breakfast, we begin the 10-hour drive back to Kathmandu, stopping for a traditional “Daal Bhat” lunch at Charikot. Our guide will drop you off at your accommodation in Kathmandu.
