If you’re seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience and a trek that offers a thrilling adventure, Western Nepal is the perfect destination for you. Historically, the far west served primarily as a gateway or stopping point for pilgrims en route to Tibet and onward to Mount Kailash. The newly opened trekking region of Limi Valley has brought about a significant change. It is now attracting trekkers who are seeking a one-of-a-kind experience that combines isolation, breathtaking mountain landscapes, and cultural authenticity. The area is restricted, but the cost of trekking permits is relatively affordable at around $50 per week. This is significantly cheaper compared to the neighboring regions of Dolpo and Mustang, where permits can cost up to $500. Trekking in this area is certainly off the beaten path, and the existing trekking infrastructure is quite basic. It is advisable for all trekking parties to be self-supported and accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide. However, those who are responsible for managing the logistics will be rewarded with an amazing experience.

Western Nepal is located in the rain shadow of Dhaulagiri, resulting in a relatively mild monsoon season. During the winter, passes are often blocked by snow, making it difficult to trek. Therefore, the optimal time for trekking is typically from late May to late October. The region can be accessed through Nepalganj. It is the largest town in western Nepal and serves as the first stop from Kathmandu. Flights to the remote airstrips and trekking access points depart from Nepalganj to Simikot, which is the starting point for the Limi Valley Trek. Additionally, flights are available to Jumla and Dunai, both located in the Dolpo Region. Nepalganj, located at an elevation of just 160m, experiences relatively high temperatures. Its proximity to the India border, being only 6km away, strongly influences the cultural aspects of the region, particularly due to its close connection with Uttar Pradesh. The town is experiencing rapid development and currently boasts several high-quality hotels. Do not miss the opportunity to take a stroll through the old bazaar.

The newly opened Limi Valley Trek is the most likely destination for trekking here. The ancient fortified villages of Janh and Halji might be the highlight of the trek, but it’s important not to overlook the remote wilderness feel and the stunning mountain scenery. The trek includes crossing two high passes: Nara La (4580m) and Nyalu La (4990m). The trek begins in Simikot, which can be reached by taking a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalganj, and then continuing on to Simikot. For those who crave adventure and don’t mind embracing the challenges of the great outdoors, an exciting option could be embarking on a month-long trek to the base camp of Api Himal. Api, Nampa, and Saipal are a series of peaks situated in the westernmost region of Nepal. These peaks, towering over 7000m, hold the distinction of being the highest in this particular section of the Himalayas.
